Salalah is the second-largest city and the former capital of Oman, whose name, thanks to the dazzling whiteness of buildings, comes from the word “shimmering”. The city is located on the coast of the Arabian Sea, a thousand kilometers southwest of Muscat.
Salalah is an ancient city. They say that the ruins of the palace in Fort Sumhuram belonged to the Queen of Sheba, and in the neighboring mountains of El-Kar inside the mausoleum is the tomb of the biblical prophet Job. Sumhuram was surrounded by walls, the remains of which were found by archaeologists. Ancient Arabic inscriptions were found along the gates on the walls, and in the city itself, there are a lot of different products from ceramics and metal. Now the remains of the walls and fortifications are a maze. To the north of Salalah are the ruins of the ancient city of Ubar, nicknamed "Atlantis of the Sands." Ubar, once a powerful trading center, was completely absorbed in the sands of the Rub al-Khali desert.
Even though the Arabian desert surrounds Salalah on three sides, the climate there is relatively temperate for most of the year. The daily temperature in Salalah only in April-May can exceed +30 °C. The rest of the time it is much more comfortable here: +27... +29 °C. In the fall, at the peak of the tourist season, the local airport receives flights from more distant countries. From all the countries of the Persian Gulf, guests flock to Salalah to take a break from the intense heat that is in another region at this time, and to look at the rugged vegetation and even waterfalls. At this time, the population of the city almost doubles, various festivals are organized. The surrounding beach is great for diving. The most popular beach - Al-Mughsail - is located in the western part of the city. There are a lot of birds, and in the early morning, you can meet camels.
